Coco substrate for potted blueberry
Blueberry has a shallow, fine, fibrous root system with no root hairs. It is intolerant of waterlogging, intolerant of salt, and it wants an acidity most growing media do not naturally provide — including ours. Read the pH note below before you order.

Substrate requirements
The most demanding crop we supply, and the one we are most cautious about
Get any one of waterlogging, salt or pH wrong and the crop shows it slowly, over a season, which is exactly the kind of failure a substrate supplier should be honest about in advance.
- Root system Shallow, no root hairs Fine and fibrous, which leaves it no reserve against either salt or saturation.
- Air-filled porosity 25.06 – 30.8 % The high-chip end of the published range, which is where this crop belongs.
- Substrate pH 5.5 – 6.8 Our natural range. Blueberry wants roughly 4.5 to 5.5, so this is above it. See the note below.
- Salt sensitivity Among the highest Low EC is not optional. We supply washed low-EC material for this crop as standard.
Because root-zone oxygen is the limiting factor for blueberry, the high-chip end of our range is where this crop belongs.

Worth considering in drier climates or smaller pots, where a 20:80 blend would need watering more often than your system allows.
Low EC is not optional for this crop. Blueberry is among the most salt-sensitive crops grown on substrate, and we supply washed low-EC material for it as standard.
Chip size, blend ratio, pot fill volume, packaging and bulk supply are all made to order — we are not limited to our standard steps, and a great deal of blueberry work ends up on a custom ratio.
EC figures use the 1:1.5 volume extract method.

Blueberry wants a root zone around pH 4.5 to 5.5. Our cocopeat sits naturally at pH 5.5 to 6.8, which is above that range.

A 20:80 cocopeat to chip blend at 25.06% air-filled porosity is our usual recommendation. Straight chips at 30.8% suit high rainfall, larger pots or very high irrigation frequency.
