The format

When an open top planter bag beats a slab or a pot

An open top planter bag arrives as a compressed unit of coco substrate inside its own film sleeve. You place it, cut the top open, hydrate it, and plant into it. There is no separate pot to buy, fill, store or dispose of, and no loose substrate to handle on site.

For growers, that removes the most labour-intensive part of establishing a crop. Filling pots is slow, dusty work that has to happen in a short window before planting. A planter bag turns it into placing a unit and adding water.

Compared with a flat slab, the open top format gives a deeper root volume per plant. That suits crops with a larger root system, longer cycles, or situations where you want more buffer against irrigation failure than a shallow slab can hold.

The bag is the container. Everything that happens to it happens in the growing position.

The deeper the bag, the more the base matters. Water collects at the bottom of any container, and in a planter bag that saturated zone is further from the plant than it would be in a slab. The blend has to keep air moving through the lower profile.

Applications

Where growers use coco planter bags

  • Berry production Blueberry, raspberry and blackberry need a deep, free-draining root volume. A high-chip blend gives the air-filled porosity these crops require while holding enough water between irrigations.
  • Long-cycle protected vegetables Where a grower wants more root volume than a slab provides — larger tomato or pepper plants, or a crop being carried longer than usual.
  • Nursery and propagation Uniform units that can be placed by hand, hydrated in place and planted the same day.
  • High-value crops Where legal for commercial horticulture, and where root volume per plant is generous.
  • Trials and new sites The bag is self-contained, so growers use planter bags to trial coco substrate before committing a whole house to a gutter and slab system.
  • Cane fruit Perennial crops in five to ten litres per plant, where the base of the container decides the crop.

EC measured by the 1:1.5 volume extract method. If your specification uses saturated media extract, tell us and we will supply the equivalent figure. The two differ by roughly a factor of two, and it is the most common reason a perfectly good sample gets rejected.
