What a coco grow bag is, and how blend ratio changes it

A coco grow bag is a compressed unit of coir substrate inside a film sleeve. It ships dense and dry, the grower hydrates it in place, and the crop is planted straight into it. Because the substrate and the container arrive as one unit, there is no pot to fill and no loose material to handle on site.

What separates one grow bag from another is not the film. It is the balance between how much water the substrate holds and how much air remains in the root zone once it is wet. That balance is set by the ratio of fine cocopeat to coarse coco chips, and it is the single most important decision you will make about a grow bag.

More cocopeat means more water buffer and less air. More chips means more air and less buffer. Neither is better in the abstract. The right ratio depends on your crop, your irrigation frequency and your climate, and a supplier who recommends the same blend to everyone is not paying attention.

EC measured by the 1:1.5 volume extract method. If your specification uses saturated media extract, tell us and we will supply the equivalent figure. The two differ by roughly a factor of two, and it is the most common reason a perfectly good sample gets rejected.

What the low-EC grade means

  • Low-EC grade Below 0.5 mS/cm Washed with water alone. No chemical treatment of any kind.

Choosing

Choosing a coco grow bag for your crop

Three things decide the blend, and none of them is the crop name on its own.

  • Irrigation frequency The more often you irrigate, the less buffer the substrate needs to hold and the more you benefit from air. A grower running twenty short shots a day can use a far more open blend than one irrigating three times.
  • Climate and season Warm, bright conditions dry the slab quickly, which favours retention. A retentive slab that was ideal in July can suffocate roots in January, so growers with long seasons often accept more air than summer alone would suggest.
  • Root volume per plant A shallow strawberry trough holds a small volume and dries fast, so retention matters. A deep planter bag holds far more, and water collects at the base further from the roots, so drainage matters more.

Custom coco grow bags: dimensions, drainage holes and print

Most grow bag orders are not catalogue items, because slab length has to suit gutter spacing and hole layout has to suit plant density. Everything below is made to order.

  • Blend ratio Any proportion, not only the five in the table above.
  • Particle grade Fine, medium or coarse pith; chip grades from 6 mm to 25 mm.
  • Compressed dimensions Cut to your press and pallet specification.
  • Expanded volume Compression adjusted so one bag rehydrates to the litreage your growers plan around.
  • Planting holes Count, spacing and dimensions for your plant density.
  • Drainage holes Number, diameter and position, which determines how the base of the slab behaves.
  • EC level Washed to low EC, or unwashed if you process in-house.
  • Buffering Calcium buffered on request, or supplied unbuffered.
  • Film Colour, gauge and UV specification.
  • Print Plain, or your own artwork and batch labelling.

Coco grow bag questions buyers ask

We are a manufacturer. Production, washing, drying, blending and packing all happen at our own facility in Peravurani, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. We are not a trading office placing orders with third-party units, and visitors are welcome.

There is no minimum. We will take a single container. Many suppliers will not quote below three or five containers, which makes trying a new source expensive. We would rather take one container that ships correctly and earn the second order.

It depends on compressed dimensions and stacking, so we confirm the loaded figure against your exact specification before quoting rather than giving an estimate.

All our EC figures are measured by the 1:1.5 volume extract method. If your specification uses saturated media extract, tell us and we will supply the equivalent figure. The two differ by roughly a factor of two.

Yes. Blending and packing are done to your requirement. If your crop needs 65:35, or a particular particle grade, slab length, drainage hole layout or printed film, that is what we produce.

Our standard product is unbuffered, washed with water alone. Calcium buffering is a chemical treatment we carry out only on request. The two are often confused: washing with water removes the loose salts and brings EC down, while buffering uses a calcium solution to displace the sodium and potassium bound to the exchange sites. Low EC does not require any chemical at all.

No to both, and we say so plainly. We wash and screen but do not heat-treat, and we do not currently test for pathogens, so we do not describe the product as pathogen-free. We do not hold organic certification.

Yes. Every container ships with the batch test report for that exact production lot, and we retain a sealed duplicate here under the same batch number, so any question about a delivery can be checked against physical material.
