Cucumber grows fast and transpires heavily, so the substrate has to deliver a large volume of water through the day without the root zone ever becoming saturated. We blend, compress, fill and pack to your gutter layout at our own facility in Tamil Nadu.

Substrate requirements

High water demand, low tolerance for a wet slab base

Those two requirements pull in opposite directions, which is why cucumber growers tend to run high irrigation frequency with a generous drain percentage and want a substrate that empties predictably between shots.

  • Air-filled porosity 21.0 % The 50:50 blend. Drainage a high-frequency fertigation programme needs, without giving up the buffer.
  • Water buffering 5.66 L/kg A real water buffer at that air fraction, measured across the same blend.
  • Transpiration Heavy The crop grows fast and moves a large volume of water through the day.
  • Wet slab base Less forgiving than tomato Growers moving from a very retentive medium often find they need more air, not more buffer.

Blending and packing are done to your requirement. Ratios, particle grade, compressed dimensions, hole configuration, film and print are all made to order. Tell us what your crop and your handling line need and we will produce to it.

Root zone

What happens in the root zone

Water and air compete for the same pore space. On a crop that transpires this heavily, how quickly the slab empties matters as much as how much it holds.

  • Fine pith fraction Holds the water. Deeper in the profile as the fine fraction rises.
  • Coarse chip fraction Holds the air. The pore space between the flakes is what keeps the profile open.
  • Root zone and drainage Roots work through both fractions; what the profile cannot hold leaves at the base.

  2. 02 Air Held in the coarse chip fraction. Cucumber wants more of it than tomato does.
  3. 03 Slab base Where a retentive medium fails this crop. It has to empty predictably between shots.
  4. 04 Drain percentage Generally run generous, which the blend has to be able to support.
  5. 05 Irrigation frequency High frequency needs more air and less buffer. Low frequency needs the reverse.

Our standard product is unbuffered, washed with water alone to below 0.5 mS/cm with no chemical treatment. Calcium buffering is a separate chemical process available on request. Tell us your fertigation approach and we will advise.
