Elevated tabletop strawberry gives each plant a very small volume of substrate to live in. That changes the priorities completely compared with a tomato slab: the buffer is short, so water holding capacity and re-wettability matter more than raw drainage.
- Water buffering 7.32 L/kg Straight cocopeat holds the most water in our range, which is what a short buffer needs.
- Air-filled porosity 5.2 – 10.2 % The retentive end of the published range. Here re-wettability matters more than raw drainage.
- Salt sensitivity Among the highest Sodium and potassium a tomato crop would tolerate can suppress a strawberry crop.

The better choice in warmer climates, in longer troughs, or wherever the base of the slab has previously stayed too wet. The chip fraction opens the profile without giving up much buffer.
Low EC matters more here than the blend does. We supply washed low-EC material for strawberry as standard, and we can supply buffered material where your programme calls for it.
These are starting points from measured properties, not prescriptions. Tell us your trough or tabletop volume per plant, your irrigation frequency and your climate, and we will suggest a ratio — including one that is not on our standard list, since we blend to order.
EC figures use the 1:1.5 volume extract method.
Root zone
What happens in a shallow trough
The smaller the volume per plant, the less margin there is between one irrigation and the next. Everything below follows from that.

- Fine pith fraction Holds the water. Deeper in the profile as the fine fraction rises.
- Coarse chip fraction Holds the air. The pore space between the flakes is what keeps the profile open.
- Root zone and drainage Roots work through both fractions; what the profile cannot hold leaves at the base.
- 01 Root volume Very small per plant on an elevated tabletop, which shortens every buffer the substrate can offer.
- 02 Water holding Matters more than raw drainage, because there is no reserve to fall back on.

Straight 100% cocopeat is the usual starting point at 7.32 L per kg water holding capacity, because the root volume per plant is small and irrigation is frequent and short. An 80:20 blend suits warmer climates or longer troughs.

The 1:1.5 volume extract method. If your specification uses saturated media extract, tell us and we will supply the equivalent figure. The two differ by roughly a factor of two.
Our standard product is unbuffered, washed with water alone to below 0.5 mS/cm. That matters for strawberry, because low EC here is achieved naturally rather than by chemical treatment. Calcium buffering is a separate chemical process available on request. Tell us your fertigation approach and we will advise which is right.
