Coco substrate for bell pepper and capsicum
Bell pepper is a long-cycle crop with a slower early growth rate than tomato or cucumber, so the substrate has to be forgiving at both ends of the season. We blend, compress, fill and pack to your gutter layout at our own facility in Tamil Nadu.

Substrate requirements
A long crop that is slow to establish and easy to overwater early
In the first weeks the plant is drawing relatively little water, so a substrate that holds a large buffer can stay wet for too long and set the root system back for the whole season.
- Air-filled porosity 21.0 % The 50:50 blend. The higher air fraction protects the crop during slow early establishment.

Later in the cycle the position reverses and water demand climbs sharply. A pepper substrate therefore has to be forgiving at both ends, which in practice usually means favouring air over buffer and steering with irrigation frequency instead.

Blending and packing are done to your requirement. Ratios, particle grade, compressed dimensions, hole configuration, film and print are all made to order. Tell us what your crop and your handling line need and we will produce to it.

Root zone
What happens in the root zone
The same slab has to serve a crop that wants almost nothing in week three and a great deal in month six.

- Fine pith fraction Holds the water. Deeper in the profile as the fine fraction rises.
- Coarse chip fraction Holds the air. The pore space between the flakes is what keeps the profile open.
- Root zone and drainage Roots work through both fractions; what the profile cannot hold leaves at the base.
- 01 Establishment Low uptake. A large buffer stays wet too long and sets the root system back for the season.
- 02 Air Held in the coarse chip fraction, and what protects the crop through that period.
- 03 Peak demand Water demand climbs sharply later, so the buffer still has to be there.
- 04 Steering Favour air over buffer and steer with irrigation frequency instead.
- 05 Drainage Hole number, diameter and position decide how the base of the slab behaves.

The 1:1.5 volume extract method. If your specification uses saturated media extract, tell us and we will supply the equivalent figure. The two differ by roughly a factor of two.
Our standard product is unbuffered, washed with water alone to below 0.5 mS/cm with no chemical treatment. Calcium buffering is a separate chemical process available on request, and for a long-cycle pepper crop on automated fertigation it is usually worth it.
